Declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993, it is a distinction that recognizes its environmental diversity. Almost all the habitats of the Mediterranean are in Menorca.
Menorca is a natural treasure that includes cliffs rising in the centre of the island and that follow a winding route to the coast forming a genuine natural exhibit that includes a variety of flora, remains of old limestone quarries, prehistoric structures, and marshes and lagoons where the Albufera Natural Park of Es Grau (a jewel of nature where up to 100 unique specimens of different species have been found), Addaia, Son Saura and Son Bou are highlighted.
With 216 kilometres of coastline and over 70 beaches and coves such as Cala Galdana, Macarella, Cala Turqueta, Son Bou, Cala Mesquida, which are the natural attraction par excellence. Beaches of fine white sand in the south and of thicker red sand in the north, colour that contrasts with the crystalline water.
Menorca is the most family-oriented of the Balearic Islands and is ideal for rest, but is also known for its festivals, the most famous are those of Sant Joan (Festival of the Horse) in Ciutadella, or the Feast of the Mare de Deu de Gràcia in Mahon. Also noteworthy is the cuisine, especially the Menorca stew.
